Q: Since Tau Beta Sigma is a Sorority, can only women be members?

A: Absolutely not! Tau Beta Sigma is a co-ed sorority which means both men and women can be members.

Q: What is a male member of Tau Beta Sigma called?

A: Since we are a sorority we are all "Sisters". Our counterpart fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi is also co-ed and are referred to as "Brothers" regardless of gender. These terms are not gender based, they are how the organization identifies.

Q: What is required of me to be eligible to joint Tau Beta Sigma?

A: To be eligible for Active Membership into the Chi Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma you must:

  • Be a university student enrolled in an instrumental ensemble at The Ohio State University

  • Pay membership dues

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.25

  • Attend weekly chapter meetings and mandatory events

Q: How much of a commitment is being a member of Tau Beta Sigma?

A: Tau Beta Sigma is an organization where you get out what you put in. We take on a variety of projects and the more involved you wish to be in these projects, the more time you sacrifice. We follow the philosophy that school/academics come first, then band, and then Tau Beta Sigma. If you are concerned talk with an active sister and we can help make accommodations when appropriate. If you have good time management skills and wish to be involved in Tau Beta Sigma, we believe you will come to find that your time sacrificed will be time well spent.

Q: How do I become a member?

A: Chi has its recruitment in the Fall Semester. This year, recruitment is September 23-26. We hold an Interview Night in which interested candidates will be asked questions about their musical, leadership, and academic history as well as questions about personality and values. Attendance to Interview Night is mandatory to join Chi. Interview Night will be held on September 28th. Chi also organizes recruitment events leading up to Interview Night where interested individuals can socialize with active sisters, learn about Tau Beta Sigma, and have fun!

If the Chapter decides you would be a good addition to Chi, then you will receive a "bid" for membership, or an invitation to begin the membership process. If you accept, you will be required to attend Membership Education Classes to learn more about our organization, history, values, and mission. Upon completion of the Membership Education Process, the Chapter votes to admit you as an Active Member based on you performance during the Membership Education Process. It is after this vote that you will be initiated into our Chapter and into Tau Beta Sigma.

Q: What kind of person would be a good Sister?

A: We look for leaders, outstanding musicians, and passionate individuals in the bands who have the desire to give back to the band program at Ohio State. Tau Beta Sigma's members strive to follow the 8 and 5, which are the Factors and Qualities we agree are important.

Q: How would I benefit from being a Sister?

A: There are may benefits to being a sister!

A non-exhaustive list of the benefits of Sisterhood would be:

  • New friendships and connections with fellow band members and students at the university

  • The opportunities for leadership experience

  • Professional development growth

  • Networking with professional musicians

  • Opportunities to travel to District and National events

  • Chance to give back to the band program at Ohio State and to help bands in the community

  • So much more! Talk to a sister about what they have gained from being a member.
